Grade 6 – Native American Project

Students are choosing a Native American Tribe to research for a paper you will write and a presentation you will give to the class. They have 3 main questions:  1. How did they use their environment to get food? 2. How did they use the environment for shelter? How did the environment affect the development of their culture? All information should be based on conditions prior to European contact or what is sometimes called Pre-Columbian, which means life before Columbus arrived in 1492. They may also add a summary of the effects of European contact, but this is in addition to the main focus which is how did the natives used their environment.

What should be included?

1. Choose a tribe by Monday, March 10, 2014.  On March 17 you will choose a date for your presentation. All work must be complete and presented by March 31, 2014

2. Bibliography, students must write a bibliography that lists 5 or more sources of information for your report. It must contain at least one book that you can show your teacher.

3. Must have a drawing, preferably hand drawn, of the food or ways they got food and a written explanation.

4. Must have a drawing, preferably hand drawn, of the shelter or ways they protected themselves and a written explanation.

5. How did the environment  affect the development of the culture? Examples of cultural artifacts should be included along with a written explanation.
